TOMODACHI Initiative Announces Enhanced Partnerships at Reception Hosted by Ambassador Hagerty

On December 5th, 2017, U.S. Ambassador to Japan William F. Hagerty hosted the TOMODACHI reception at his official residence. Over 150 guests, representing donor companies, government, non-profit organizations and TOMODACHI alumni attended the reception, including Minister for Reconstruction, Masayoshi Yoshino, representing the Government of Japan, and Governor of Fukushima Prefecture, Masao Uchibori.

Prior to the reception, Ambassador Hagerty held a round-table discussion with senior representatives of several TOMODACHI donor companies. The discussion was led by Irene Hirano Inouye, President of the U.S.-Japan Council, and the attendees discussed the role of TOMODACHI in U.S.-Japan relations, and the importance of investing in the development of next generation leaders.

Several announcements were also made at the reception, including the extension of partnerships with FAST RETAILING CO., LTD.Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in JapanHonda Motor Co., Ltd.Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., and Sumitomo Corporation, with commitments through 2020 and 2021.  Read More>>

The Latest on TOMODACHI Programs and Activities

The Post-Trip symposium of the TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Training Program celebrated the program’s accomplishments over the past three years    

On December 3, 2017, the Post-Trip symposium of the TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Training Program took place at the TKP Garden City Sendai Kotodai. All the participants, mentors, and staff arrived in Sendai on the previous day to prepare for the symposium.

Since the Post-Trip Seminar in September, the participants tested and implemented the activities they developed and overcame the difficulties of making the projects successful.  Along the way, the participants came to realize the challenges of trying to do everything by themselves. They therefore learned the importance of asking for other people’s support, including tips on how to ask for help. They were also deeply moved by the accomplishments they all made by giving back to their communities. Read More>>

2017 TOMODACHI Sumitomo Scholars Visit Washington, D.C. and New York City through a week-long leadership training

Four of the university students who are studying abroad in the United States through the TOMODACHI Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship Program visited Washington D.C. and New York city for a week long, winter leadership program hosted by Sumitomo Corporation of America.

Highlight of the week included a group discussion with U.S.-Japan Council (USJC) President Irene Hirano Inouye, in which the students had an opportunity to hear the work involved in starting and managing a non-profit organization, characteristics of a good leader and ways to contribute to society. One of the TOMODACHI Sumitomo Scholars, Kiyoka Oyabu, currently studying in Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, commented the professionals she met during this trip have given her inspiration and motivation to study harder to pursue her goals. 125 Female High School Students from Fukushima Become Inspired and Find Role Models from the Session with Female Professionals

From December 16 to 17, 2017, STEP3 of the TOMODACHI High School Women Career Mentoring Program in Fukushima 2017 supported by the TOMODACHI Combini Fund was held at the National Olympic Memorial Youth Center in Yoyogi, Tokyo.
A total of 24 female employees from seven TOMODACHI Sponsor companies (EVOLUTION FINANCIAL GROUP, Kikkoman Corporation, All-Nippon Airways Co., Ltd., Pasona Inc., FamilyMart Co., Ltd., Mizuho Bank, Ltd., Lawson, Inc.) were joined by three TOMODACHI employees to conduct a session titled “Your Own Future Choices”.

Before the session began, participants first presented the results from the personal challenges they set for themselves in the previous session. Students reported on their various achievements. Read More>>

Participants of the 2017 TOMODACHI Disability Leadership Program Complete Their Training in Boston

On December 20, 2017, Mio Deguchi and Haruna Sakai, participants of the TOMODACHI Disability Leadership Program in America returned from Massachusetts Boston, completing the program that began in July, 2017.

This five-month-long program engaged the trainees in a spectrum of activities, including an intensive orientation to the program and life in Boston, an individualized internship with a disability-focused government or community organization, weekly leadership seminars, and English language training. Inspired by a disability-related issue, each trainee presented their independent project that they investigated in their internships at a special award ceremony on December 14. Read More>>

The Youth Voice Rises at the World Bosai Forum through the Stories of TOMODACHI Alumni
On November 27th 2017, the TOMODACHI Alumni Disaster Resilience Training (DRT) Program concluded with final presentations about the program at the 2017 World Bosai Forum held in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. The international forum was attended by professionals and experts in the field from over 40 countries. 

This TOMODACHI Alumni DRT Program began after the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) which was held also in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture in March 2015 to respond to the need for more representation of youth in the engagement and awareness of disaster preparedness, disaster response, and disaster resilience, and it was a very special opportunity to be able to come full circle to attend this international forum and be on the same footing as these experts and professionals to share the impact that we have created in these past two years.  Read More>>
TOMODACHI Alumni Regional Framework theme event in Okinawa Region 
On December 1, 2017, the Regional Leaders from Okinawa Region held a theme event titled, “TOMODACHI Okinawa Beach Day” as a part of TOMODACHI Regional Framework. Based on the survey that leaders had conducted at the first regional event in May, this event focused on the social contribution works in Okinawa region.
 
There were 36 participants including 12 TOMODACHI alumni. The event invited 4 guest speakers who involved in social works in Okinawa to share their experience. After the lecture, participants built connections through BBQ. Read More>>
TOMODACHI Alumni Regional Framework theme event in Osaka, Kansai Region 
On December 2, 2017, Regional Leaders from the Kansai region organized a career event called “TOMO Café” as part of the TOMODACHI Alumni Regional Framework theme event. 16 people, including TOMODACHI alumni, participated in this career event, which was designed for students and young professionals.

The event’s highlights were the presentation and panel discussion, which were led by the guest speakers. The three guest speakers, who are based in Kansai, talked about events that have influenced their lives and the dreams they held when they were students. The latter part of the event consisted of a workshop, in which everyone participated. The participants imagined how their communities, Japan, the world, their careers, and personal lives would change over the next 10 and 20 years, which they wrote down in their worksheets. Read More>>
TOMODACHI Alumni Regional Framework theme event in Fukushima, Tohoku-Hokkaido Region  
On December 9th 2017, over twenty-three TOMODACHI Alumni gathered at the community space Fukushima Kotohiraku in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture to attend an event organized by 2017 Regional Leaders Yumeka Watanabe and Ayaka Kibushi representing the Fukushima area of the Tohoku-Hokkaido Region. With support from their Regional Mentor, Shizuka Ishiyama, they organized an event focused on sharing the impact of the TOMODACHI Generation.  The day-long event consisted of three parts: Speaker Series, Omusubi Workshop, and Words for the Future. TOMODACHI Alumni Regional Framework theme event in Sendai, Tohoku-Hokkaido Region
On December 23, 2017, Regional Leaders from the Tohoku-Hokkaido Region Team 2 organized event called “FIND YOUR TOHOKU.” They focused on rebranding Tohoku region. Over 30 people from high school students to adult including TOMODACHI alumni participated in the event.

Regional Leader Momoka Sato mentioned that “nearly 7 years has passed from the Great East Japan Earthquake. This is the turning period for victims. This event provided a great opportunity for people who want to tell what happened during the earthquake and after the earthquake.”  Read More>>
The Part 2 of the TOMODACHI KaoLINK Fukushima Rebanding Program 2017-2018 took place at the Sumida Aquarium in Tokyo 
The second part of the TOMODACHI KaoLINK Fukushima Rebranding Program 2017-2018 took place at the Sumida Aquarium in Tokyo on December 10, 2017. The participants learned about the intricacies that go into the installation of scent into specific spaces and prepared scents and stories for the upcoming Nakayama Setsugekka Snow Festival taking place from February 16 – 17, 2018, in Shimogo Town, Fukushima Prefecture.

The festival was launched in 2005 by local youth who wanted to bolster the community by creating a festival that would bring people to their town. Every year, the town welcomes over 2,000 people over the course of the festival. This year will be the first time scent will be introduced and installed into the festival, and the alumni spent the weekend creating the story and scent that will be installed at the event in February. Read More>>

Applications Now Open for the TOMODACHI Summer 2018 SoftBank Leadership Program
Applications Now Open for the TOMODACHI Summer 2018 SoftBank Leadership Program!

The program will take place from July 20, 2018 to August 9, 2018 (dates are tentative), sending 100 Japanese high school students from the disaster affected prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima to the University of California, Berkeley, for an intensive three-week workshop focused on community-based projects and leadership development. Launched in 2012, the program is now entering its seventh year.

Applications Open for the TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Program 2018

The TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Training Program aims for the participants to help strengthen disaster nursing in Japan overall, by sharing what they learned with each of their respective regions. Through the approximately seven months of training, participants are expected to build on their experience following the Great East Japan Earthquake, acquire the skills and knowledge to respond to disasters and emergency situations, and play an active role in their respective regions as future leaders in the field of disaster nursing.

The program will take place from August 1 through November 30.

The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund/Toshizo Watanabe Study Abroad Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to undergraduates/graduate students for a semester or year-long study abroad program in either the United States or Japan. The scholarship will support up to the full cost of attendance to the study abroad program of the applicant’s choice. The scholarship program grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications.
