Twenty-One Japanese and American Students Develop Initiative to Address an Ongoing Social Challenges During Two-Week Seminar in Washington, D.C.
The seventh annual Building the TOMODACHI Generation: Morgan Stanley Ambassadors Program began on February 29, 2020, as 12 students from universities across Japan flew from Tokyo to Washington, D.C. These students participated in a two-week workshop that focused on developing an in-depth understanding of civil society and cross-sector partnerships, and enhanced their ability to address social issues in the United States and Japan. Nine American participants joined the Japanese students during the program and worked together to create an initiative to resolve an ongoing social challenge in Japan.
In order for the participants to establish a strong understanding of the concept of civil society and ways various organizations operate both within and across their respective sectors, the first week of the program consisted of five days of lectures, panel discussions, site visits, and interactive sessions with experienced professionals from government institutions, distinguished nonprofits, and corporate foundations. Site visits to institutions across various sectors such as the World Bank, National Public Radio, KABOOM!, and the U.S. House of Representatives provided participants with vivid insights to what civil society partnerships look like in practice, not just in theory. Message from the TOMODACHI Initiative in Response to the Recent Novel Coronavirus Outbreak
The novel coronavirus (“COVID-19”) outbreak that was first detected in China is now having an increased impact on business, events, and travel in Japan and beyond. The U.S.-Japan Council (USJC) continues to monitor the situation in Japan and the United States and implement the expert recommendations of national and international authorities including the World Health Organization (WHO), United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). In addition, the USJC regularly tracks guidance from both governments and local municipalities where the programs are held.
USJC’s highest priority is the safety of all participants and the effectiveness of our programs. As the situation evolves and new information and guidelines from the WHO, CDC, and/or MHLW are released, USJC will coordinate with stakeholders and donors to determine whether to continue, cancel, or postpone each program on a case-by-case basis.
