TOMODACHI Generation: Satomi Ono
Satomi Ono visited Seattle, Washington as a participant of the TOMODACHI FIRST Program. Born in Kesennuma, Miyagi, Ono is currently in the 2nd year of her Master of Arts in Media and Governance degree at Keio University.
Ono grew up seeing how local communities are formed at her father’s restaurant in Kesennuma. After 3.11, she realized her indifference and ignorance of society and the economy. At the same time, she realized that she was interested in connecting with others and the importance of people’s smiles. Then, she decided to do something so that she could connect with people and bring them more happiness.
For the four years since 2011, Ono has served as the leader of a volunteer group that plays with children in Kesennuma, and she has developed her leadership skills through the experience of managing the group.
Through the TOMODACHI FIRST program, Ono clarified what she wants to do and what she should do by interacting with others. She believed that this experience in Seattle can contribute to the globally connected culture of Kesennuma, because Seattle is similar to Kesennuma in that both cities have a port. In her future, she wants to take over the operation of her father’s restaurant, where she can provide not only delicious fish but also an opportunity for customers to communicate.
