On October 14, 2025, the award ceremony for the 12th cohort of the TOMODACHI Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship Program was held online, with approximately 30 participants, including representatives from Sumitomo Corporation, the U.S.-Japan Council, and university officials.
During the ceremony, Mr. Makiko Eda,  Managing Executive Officer, Chief Sustainability, DE&I Officer, Chief Administration Officer, Chief Compliance Officer of Sumitomo Corporation, and Mr. Henry Takata, Representative Director of U.S.-Japan Council (Japan), delivered remarks, sending their encouragement to the 12th cohort, who have already begun their studies abroad, marking an official milestone in the program. Following this, Mr. Eda presented certificates to each member of the 12th cohort individually.

To conclude the event, each student shared their goals for studying abroad and participating in the program in English. Masayori Itome from Osaka University, who is studying biotechnology at the University of Oregon, stated:
“During this year, I hope to learn more about biotechnology from the U.S. perspective and to develop my critical thinking and communication skills. In the future, I hope to contribute to the development of biotechnology research and industry, especially by helping people suffering from dementia. In addition to my studies, this program has given me an opportunity to meet various people, not just from the U.S., but from other countries. Such an opportunity will broaden my viewpoints about the world. My goal is to use my expanded viewpoints to be a bridge between Japan and the U.S. and to be a good leader in the world.”

TOMODACHI住友ACThe 12th cohort, who have already started their studies in the U.S., also participated in the U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference held in October 2025, attending workshops and events over four days. Looking ahead, an East Coast training program is scheduled for March 2026, followed by a final report session upon their return. Through their experiences abroad and program activities, these scholars are expected to gain new insights, build networks, and develop into leaders who will serve as bridges between Japan and the U.S.
