Building Bridges: TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program Share Experiences in Japan

On March 1st and 9th, 2024, participants from Loyola Marymount University (LMU) and Howard University recounted their journeys in the TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program, respectively. This ten-day youth exchange program fosters cultural understanding between American and Japanese university students. Launched in 2014, it also honors the legacy of Senator Daniel K. Inouye by offering participants insights into his contributions to his nation, heritage, and the U.S.-Japan relationship.

Participants shared their action plans to disseminate what they have learned through the program in their own communities. Representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE) and the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC) commented, emphasizing the program’s role in building human connections that strengthen U.S.-Japan relations.

The event also featured TOMODACHI alumni with engaging panel discussions.

On March 1st, Mayu Matsuo, an alumna of 2015 TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program spoke about how the program fostered her personal and cultural growth, particularly regarding American work styles in her current job with international companies. Mason Williams, an alumnus of 2017 TOMODACHI Daiwa House Student Leadership Conference and current regional leader, highlighted how the program allows him to integrate cross-cultural communication into his daily life.

On March 9th, Lillian Hart, alumna from 2014 TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program gave countless concrete actions the students can take to live and work in Japan. She shared the career path she has taken after the program and how she has continued to connect with the TOMODACHI community. Akira Deguchi, alumnus of 2015 TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program shared that he did not speak any English when he participated in the program, however, the program encouraged him to study abroad in the US for one year. Currently he works in a realm of international business supporting Japanese companies to thrive in the global market.

All alumni concluded by encouraging the participants to maximize their student experiences and hone their skills as future leaders.
