TOMODACHI Toshizo Watanabe Leadership Program 2022
The TOMODACHI Toshizo Watanabe Leadership Program is for high school students from all over Japan, who are the next generation leaders, and aims to develop human resources who will contribute to U.S.-Japan relations in the future. Through homestays, school visits, interacting with the American students, as well as learning about American History, and being exposed to many different stories, participants will gain leadership skills and international sensibility.

Application Requirements
(Students)
- Students who are enrolled in the first through third grade of high school or technical college in Japan at the time of travel in August 2022
- Physically and mentally healthy, and able to participate in all programs
- Japanese nationals, or those with permanent residency
- Those who can participate in the orientation (online) on July 9, 2022
- Those who can participate in the pre-travel training on August 9, 2022
- Those who are able to present about his/her experience at their school
- Those who agree with the purpose of the program and are willing to actively and cooperatively participate in a different culture
- Those who have not traveled abroad before, or those who have little travel experience
※ Those who have traveled to the U.S. under previous TOMODACHI programs are not eligible to apply
※Applicants who have allergies or are taking medication may be asked to submit a doctor’s note
※ Participants are required to submit program questionnaires and assignments
※Proof of vaccination against novel coronavirus infection is required for those 18 years of age and older upon entry into the U.S.Vaccination is not required for those under 18 years of age, but if not vaccinated, the guidelines of the destination country may limit the activities in which they can participate
(Faculty)
- Those who are working as a teacher at a high school or technical college in Japan at the time of travel in August 2022
- Physically and mentally healthy, and able to participate in all programs
- Japanese nationals, or those with permanent residency
- Those who can participate in the orientation (online) on July 9, 2022
- Those who can participate in the pre-travel training on August 9, 2022
- Must be able to support the student’s learning, lead discussions and reflections during the program.
- Those who agree with the purpose of the program and are willing to actively and cooperatively participate in a different culture
※ Applicants who have allergies or are taking medication may be asked to submit a doctor’s note after being admitted to the program
※ Applicants are required to submit program questionnaires and participate in meetings with relevant personnel
※ Proof of vaccination against novel coronavirus infection is required upon entry into the U.S.
Participation Fee
- Paid by the organizer:
Round-trip transportation from the Shinkansen station or airport nearest to your home to the meeting/dismissal point, round-trip international airfare, travel insurance, ESTA application fee, accommodation expenses (lodging, meals, various activities) during the program, transportation, lodging, and meals, and expenses related to the novel coronavirus countermeasures required for entry into the United States and Japan, etc.
- Participant’s share
Passport acquisition cost, personal expenses, doctor’s note costs (for those eligible), expenses related to the novel coronavirus (partial costs incurred if infected during the program), etc.
