Japanese University Students Studying in the U.S. Visit New York for a Leadership Training Program

From March 6 to 10, 2022, ten scholars, the 8th cohort of the TOMODACHI Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship Program, participated in the leadership training program held in New York City. The training was generously hosted by Sumitomo Corporation and the Sumitomo Corporation of Americas. The program provided the students with the opportunity to foster their leadership skills.

On the first day of training, each scholar gave presentations on their study abroad experience to date. They participated in a lecture by Professor David Weinstein, Professor of Japanese Economy, Director of Research at the Center on Japanese Economy and Business at Columbia University, as well as met with people from Sumitomo Corporation, Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, and the U.S.-Japan Council. They also had an opportunity to visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and Broadway.

One of the scholars, Genta Yamaguchi commented, “During the training, I was able to talk to people who are active in different fields. From what they have in common, I was able to get inspiration for my future.”

Scholars will finish their study abroad and come back to Japan in May and June. Upon returning, the students will make presentations, reflecting on their time studying abroad and how to utilize their experiences in the future.
