Secretary Kerry Dialogue with TOMODACHI Youth 2013

On April 14, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with 20 TOMODACHI Generation students at the residence of U.S. Ambassador John Roos.  During a wide-ranging discussion with the participants, the Secretary addressed topics such as international student exchange between Japan and the United States, environmental stewardship, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Students from a variety of backgrounds participated and were challenged to embrace their leadership potential.  “I thought that to be a global leader, strategy and knowledge were most important.  However, I learned that in order to make the world better, strong will and heart are truly the most important,” said Nobuyuki Nakamura, a student at the Osaka School of International Public Policy in Osaka, Japan and participant of the Clinton Global Initiative University program thanks to the TOMODACHI Initiative.

After hearing from the young people about their experiences, interests, and concerns, Secretary Kerry said to the students: “We need your leadership.  In a span of a few minutes we talked about all kinds of difficult problems that need solutions… We need more people who are leaders, who want to go out and make a difference.  I’m counting on you. ”
