    TOMODACHI GLA 2.0 Kicks Off

    GLA

The TOMODACHI Generation Global Leadership Academy (GLA) 2.0 launched its in-person program in Onagawa, Miyagi, following an online orientation in September that introduced participants to TOMODACHI’s history, fostered team-building, and established a shared sense of purpose. Over two days in Onagawa on September 27 – 28, 2025, participants explored leadership, resilience, and community through a series of immersive experiences.

The program began with a workshop encouraging students to shift from solving problems to asking questions, helping them articulate their own perspectives on leadership and prepare for their final presentations. A powerful moment came during a visit to the remains of Okawa Elementary School, where Mr. Toshiro Sato of the Okawa Memorial Association shared the story of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. His words underscored the importance of turning tragedy into lessons for the future and challenged participants to reflect on ethical decision-making in times of crisis.

Participants also heard from Mr. Ryuta Suzuki, who left a career in Tokyo’s IT sector to become a fisherman in Onagawa. His story highlighted the differences between global and local leadership, inspiring students to think about how creativity and community can enrich both work and life. This theme of active engagement continued during a hands-on dinner workshop, where alumni and local residents guided students in preparing Pacific saury (sanma), scallops, and squid. For many, it was their first time filleting fish, and the collaborative meal became a lesson in teamwork and shared accomplishment.

Small-group mentoring sessions with TOMODACHI alumni from Tohoku provided another opportunity for deep connection. Alumni shared candid insights on career choices, tackling social issues, and the importance of following one’s passions, offering valuable guidance to the younger generation. The program concluded with a reflection session, where participants identified areas in which they hoped to grow—such as building confidence and becoming pioneers in their fields—leaving Onagawa with renewed motivation for the Tokyo portion of GLA 2.0.

Ririka Goto reflected, “It had been six years since I last joined GLA. When COVID happened, it felt like time had stopped. But I’m so glad I was able to join GLA again.”

Through this meaningful program, participants gained a deeper understanding of leadership rooted in resilience, creativity, and community, while strengthening their commitment to making a difference locally and globally.
