TOMODACHI Initiative – Remembering 3.11 and Looking Toward the Future
On March 11, 2025, as we mark the 14th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, we once again extend our deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in this unprecedented disaster. We also offer our heartfelt sympathies to all those who were affected. The regions impacted by the disaster have made significant progress in recovery and rebuilding, and we express our sincere respect to everyone who has contributed to these efforts.
Additionally, as we entered 2025, large-scale wildfires occurred in Los Angeles, and Ofunato, Iwate. We extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by these disasters.
Born out of “Operation Tomodachi,” the joint relief efforts of the U.S. military and Japan Self-Defense Forces following the Great East Japan Earthquake, the TOMODACHI Initiative initially focused on supporting recovery efforts in the Tohoku region. Since then, it has expanded to foster the next generation of leaders across Japan and the United States.
In 2024, the “TOMODACHI Kibou for Maui Program” was launched, bringing high school students from Maui, Hawaii—who had been impacted by devastating wildfires—to the Tohoku region. Through exchanges with the people of Tohoku who overcame the Great East Japan Earthquake, as well as TOMODACHI alumni (program graduates), the participants shared experiences and emotions while deepening their understanding of leadership and resilience. Notably, a TOMODACHI alumna who had participated in the program as a junior high school student in 2013 played a key role in implementing this program, contributing to the community through TOMODACHI.
The TOMODACHI Initiative remains committed to carrying forward the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake, fostering young U.S.-Japan leaders who will drive the recovery of disaster-affected communities and contribute to the growth and friendship between both nations.
