The TOMODACHI 2013 Spring Homestay Program provided 20 Japanese junior high and high school students from the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami (from Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate Prefectures) with a homestay and cultural exchange opportunity.

This homestay program took place in Northern Virginia, and was administered by BIEE. Participants were sent to the suburbs of Washingon, D.C. in the United States to experience living with a host family from March 22 – April 5, 2013 for two weeks during their spring break.  Through this program, students lived with their host families, experienced high school life in the U.S., and participated in various cultural exchange activities.  This program provided students with different perspectives on life, an opportunity to meet diverse people with different views, and the ability to learn the joy of communicating in English with their host family, the local people, and their new friends.
