    Announcement Regarding the Cancellation of
    the 2020-2021 TOMODACHI MetLife Women’s Leadership Program

    TOKYO, Japan, May 27, 2020 – U.S. Japan Council (Japan), TOMODACHI Initiative and MetLife Japan regretfully announce the cancellation of the 2020-2021 TOMODACHI MetLife Women’s Leadership Program (TMWLP).

    In 2013, the TOMODACHI Initiative in partnership with MetLife Japan launched the TOMODACHI MetLife Women’s Leadership Program (TMWLP) to develop the next generation of global female leaders. TMWLP provides Japanese female university students with over 10 months of leadership development training and one-on-one mentoring from mid-career professional women.

    With recruitment starting at the end of May, the 2020-2021 TMWLP was scheduled to launch in September 2020 with a series of leadership training sessions, followed by a study trip to the U.S. in March 2021, and concluding with an Annual Conference in May 2021.

    However, due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as well as expert recommendations from national and international authorities, including the World Health Organization (WHO), United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW), we have made the decision to cancel the 2020-2021 program for the health and safety of the participants.

    With our sincere apologies for the inconvenience to the candidates who were planning to apply to the program, we greatly appreciate your kind understanding. The program dates and recruitment information for the 2021-2022 TMWLP will be made available in due course through our website and other communication platforms.

    * About the TOMODACHI Initiative
    The TOMODACHI Initiative is a public-private partnership between the U.S.-Japan Council and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, with support from the Government of Japan. Born out of support for Japan’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, TOMODACHI invests in the next generation of Japanese and American leaders through educational and cultural exchanges as well as leadership programs. The initiative seeks to foster a “TOMODACHI Generation” of young American and Japanese leaders who are committed to and engaged in strengthening U.S.-Japan relations, appreciate each other’s countries and cultures, and possess the global skills and mindsets needed to contribute to and thrive in a more cooperative, prosperous, and secure world.
