Developing Capabilities of Nursing Students While Fostering Leadership in the Tohoku Region — Students Selected for the 2nd “TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Training Program”
Twelve Participants Chosen from the Three Disaster-Hit Tohoku Prefectures
With the aim of fostering the next generation of leaders in Japan and the United States, the TOMODACHI Initiative (hereafter, “TOMODACHI”; U.S.-Japan Council President: Irene Hirano Inouye) has selected participants for the 2nd TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Training Program. This program is planned and conducted through a special partnership with the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in Japan (headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; hereafter, “Johnson & Johnson”).
Johnson & Johnson’s “Our Credo,” a code of conduct worldwide, calls for responsible action in local communities, and as one of its initiatives for this, Johnson & Johnson supports the reconstruction of the Tohoku disaster-hit regions through TOMODACHI’s exchange program. Johnson & Johnson is supporting the TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Training Program over three years from 2015 to 2017 with the aim of deepening the professional knowledge of nursing students specializing in disaster medicine and nursing in Tohoku while of fostering the next generation of leaders.
Building on its achievements in 2015, this program is in its second year. The target region for applicants was expanded to Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures from only Miyagi Prefecture last year, and after undergoing a strict selection process, 12 new participants were selected.
The TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Training Program is comprised of three main components: 1) Pre-Trip Seminars, 2) Study Tour in the United States, and 3) Post-Trip Symposiums. This year, the Pre-Trip Seminars will be held in two locations (Sendai and Tokyo) from June 25. The Study Tour will take place over two weeks in August, and the participants will visit facilities and organizations specializing in disaster medicine and nursing in New York and Washington, D.C. Finally, from September, a series of symposiums will be held in the Tohoku region and Tokyo, in order for the participants to share information on the current situation and initiatives regarding advanced disaster medical care and nursing that they learned about in the United States as well as differences between the U.S. and Japan in this area.
Through this program, the participants, who themselves had experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake and disaster, will not only acquire the skills and knowledge to become leaders of the next generation, but will also be able to contribute to strengthening the overall foundation for disaster nursing in Japan by sharing their experiences, lessons, and knowledge they gained with others around the nation.
