Launch Event for the TOMODACHI Aflac Program
On June 12, 2013, the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo held a reception at the Ambassador’s residence to celebrate the selection of the first TOMODACHI-Aflac Program participant, Dr. Yosuke Hosoya. Ambassador John V. Roos hosted the event and welcomed distinguished guests including Aflac Incorporated CEO Daniel P. Amos, Aflac Japan Chairman Charles D. Lake II, and Aflac Japan President Tohru Tonoike.
“We are proud to partner with the TOMODACHI Initiative,” said Mr. Amos in his remarks. “This program is a great chance for Aflac to take action on two issues we care deeply about the fight against childhood cancer and the U.S.-Japan relationship.” Dr. Hosoya, graduate of Tohoku University School of Medicine, commented, “I look forward to gaining on-the-ground knowledge of pediatric cancer treatment in the United States and plan to make use of my experience to help improve treatment in the Tohoku region and the rest of Japan.” For six months from August 2013 to January 2014, Dr. Hosoya will participate in training at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Aflac is a sponsor of the center and will support Dr. Hosoya during his stay.
In an effort to continue to contribute to the Tohoku recovery effort, the program gives priority to those specialists from or serving the Tohoku area.
