Del Norte High School Students Meet Ambassador Kennedy in Tokyo After Visiting Rikuzentakata

Following a powerful trip to Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, six students from Del Norte high school and five community leaders from Crescent City, California, met with Ambassador Kennedy on February 21, 2014 to share their experiences. In the spring of 2013, when a barnacle-encrusted fishing boat washed up on the shores of their hometown of Crescent City, California, these students and community leaders together helped clean and scrub the small boat. Japanese characters found on the side of the boat helped it be identified as belonging to Takata High School in Rikuzentakata. In a journey that took over 2 years and 5,000 miles, this boat has symbolically laid the groundwork for a long-term relationship between the two schools and two communities, that TOMODACHI has been pleased to support.

During the meeting with Ambassador Kennedy, the students spoke about the momentous impact that the trip had on them: “Because of this program, all I can think about now is doing something abroad, definitely in Japan” said Connor Field. Another student, Griffin Walker, mentioned that she had to be pulled onto the bus as they left Takata High School as she didn’t want to leave her new-found Japanese friends.

The similarities between Crescent City and Rikusentakata are striking; separated by the Pacific Ocean, both are small fishing towns that have experienced devastating tsunamis in the past. Because of the connections created by this washed-up fishing boat and the TOMODACHI-supported delegation, Crescent City and Rikuzentakata are now trying to create sister city and sister school relationships to ensure their friendships will continue through the years. Thank you to Hitachi, Ltd, Mitsubishi Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation for helping to make this grassroots program a reality. More »

Twenty-five year-old blind piano prodigy, Nobuyuki Tsujii, accompanied the orchestra performance. Six musicians including Jonathan Spitz and Miho Saegusa from the Orpheus Orchestra also held a question-and-answer session with the students where they discussed the Orpheus Method, in which the musicians perform together without a conductor through collaboration and listening to each other. After the program, there was a renewed energy among the students. The impact the Orpheus musicians and Nobuyuki Tsujii had on the students was apparent in the way the students were carrying themselves and talking about music. More »
