Future STEM Leaders Participate in Research Internship: 2024-2025 TOMODACHI-Dow Women’s STEM Leadership and Research Program 

On February 8, 2025, the U.S. training program for the TOMODACHI-Dow Women’s STEM Leadership and Research Program officially began. Ten Japanese female university students majoring in STEM fields participated in a five-week research internship at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Prior to their departure, the participants visited Dow Chemical Japan. Each student shared their research interests and what they were most excited about in the program, followed by a Q&A session with Dow employees. During the session, the participants actively engaged in discussions, asking insightful questions about career paths, work-life balance, and other topics.

Building Bridges: TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program 2025 

From March 1st to 7th, 28 participants from Loyola Marymount University (LMU) and the Claremont Colleges consortium, including Pomona College, took part in the TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program. Launched in 2014, the program aims to foster cultural understanding between American and Japanese university students. It also honors the legacy of Senator Daniel K. Inouye by offering participants insights into his contributions to his nation, heritage, and the U.S.-Japan relationship.

TOMODACHI-U.S. Embassy Go for Gold Leadership Program 2024 Final Presentation Held 

On March 14, 2025, the “TOMODACHI – U.S. Embassy Go For Gold Sports Leadership Program,”its two-week U.S. training program, one week in Los Angeles and one week in New York, under a partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Japan, the program held its final presentation day in Tokyo, bringing the 2024-2025 program activities to a successful finale.

This year’s delegation of the program, now in its third year, was divided into three groups, which presented “University Sports in Japan,” “Raising Awareness of Pickleball,” and “Creating More Unity in the J. League,” respectively. Creating More Sense of Belongings in J.League”.

Application Open for the TOMODACHI Toshizo Watanabe Leadership Program 2025

The TOMODACHI Toshizo Watanabe Leadership Program is a training program for high school students from all over Japan who will lead the next generation and contribute to the U.S.-Japan relations in the future. Through homestays and school visits, students interact with U.S. students and are exposed to U.S. history and diverse and explore diverse narratives. This immersive experience expands their horizons, equipping them with invaluable international perspectives and leadership acumen.

The TOMODACHI MUFG Sustainable Entrepreneurship Program is a program for high school students throughout Japan. Based on the idea that “entrepreneurship” and “leadership” are something that everyone can possess and demonstrate, through the curriculum outlined below, this program aims to cultivate leaders who contribute to strengthening U.S.-Japan relations and proactively tackle challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Global Leadership Academy 2.0 – Date Change and New Application Period to Be Announced Soon 

We would like to inform you that the dates for the Global Leadership Academy 2.0 will be changed due to several inquiries we received from interested applicants that original dates were difficult to accommodate for high school students, and disabling them from applying despite their interests. At this moment, the new dates have not yet been decided. However, we are working hard to finalize the new schedule, and both the new event dates and the updated application period will be shared as soon as they are confirmed.

Q&A with TOMODACHI Program Participants and TOMODACHI Alumni: Hikaru Sato

For April’s Alumni Highlight we highlighted Hikaru Sato, who is an alumnus of the TOMODACHI Coca-Cola Educational Homestay Program. The program provides high school students affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011 with the opportunity to take part in a cultural exchange in the United States. Hikaru is currently doing his Master’s in a program called Narrative Environment at Central Saint Martin University of the Arts London. After participating in the TOMODACHI program, Hikaru began an underground movement through social media focused on music and the young club scene for youth to not only connect with one another to showcase fashion, music, and interests, but to become socially and politically aware and have a safe space to discuss with one another.

TOMODACHI Opportunities 

Interns, U.S.-Japan Council (Japan) & TOMODACHI Initiative (remote)
The U.S.-Japan Council (Japan) & TOMODACHI Initiative are currently seeking interns. The internship offers an exciting environment where interns will be exposed to the non-profit, corporate, and government fields simultaneously. Responsibilities include creating and drafting documents, translation, website management, social media management, newsletter development support, public speaking, communication with program participants, designing presentations and posters, and event planning and operations. Interns generally work remotely, but may be asked to assist with in-person events as needed.

Social Media Intern, TOMODACHI Initiative Alumni (remote)
The Social Media Intern will assist the Director of Programs and Partnerships for the U.S.-Japan Council and the TOMODACHI Alumni Coordinator in the area of social media and other marketing and communications for the TOMODACHI Initiative Alumni Leadership Program as needed.  Reports to the Director of Programs and Partnerships for the U.S.-Japan Council. This position requires conveying and dispersing information from TOMODACHI Alumni Affairs to the TOMODACHI alumni community, as well as the broader U.S.-Japan Council community.
