TOMODACHI Amway Japan Foundation Tohoku Future Leader Program 2025: U.S. Trip Inspires a New Vision for Kesennuma 

From March 25 to April 3, 2025, fifteen high school students from Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, traveled to the United States for the TOMODACHI Amway Japan Foundation Tohoku Future Leader Program 2025.
This seven-month leadership development program is designed to highlight the local charms of Tohoku andis a part of the Amway Japan Foundation’s Tohoku reconstruction project “Remember HOPE.”

TOMODACHI Initiative Intern: Ayano Hirose’s experience 

Ayano Hirose, a TOMODACHI Initiative (TOMODACHI) intern since May 2023, has deepened her interests and career direction through encounters with diverse individuals through TOMODACHI and U.S.-Japan Council (USJC) programs. She says her interest in Japanese American history and U.S.-Japan relations is at the core of her experience at TOMODACHI, and she is linking it to her graduate school research and future career. Currently enrolled in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo, she shared her experiences to date and her future plans.

Recruitment Open for the TOMODACHI SMBC Shaka-kachi Leadership Program

We are recruiting undergraduate students from universities across Japan!

This program aims to foster the next generation of leaders who are passionate about solving social issues and committed to creating both social and economic value, ultimately driving positive change in society. Over the course of six months, participants will cultivate a global mindset through diverse leadership development training and be empowered to actively engage with social challenges in Japan and around the world.

The TOMODACHI Women’s Empowerment Program is a leadership program designed to address the pressing gender gap in Japanese society. Over a six-month period, the program will engage female Japanese undergraduate students from across Japan. The program pairs students with mid-career professional mentors. Female university students will enhance their skills by learning about initiatives in the United States during a training program scheduled for February 2026.

Recruitment is open for female undergraduate students and mid-career professionals.

Announcing the Women’s Empowerment Panel at NGS 2025

Spotlighting the Voices of Changemakers

We are thrilled to unveil the panelists and a moderator for the highly anticipated “Women’s Empowerment” panel at the TOMODACHI Next Generation Summit 2025!

This year’s session will highlight the stories, insights, and bold leadership of women who are challenging norms, uplifting communities, and shaping a more equitable future. Each speaker brings a unique perspective on what it means to lead with purpose in today’s global society.

Q&A with TOMODACHI Program Participants and TOMODACHI Alumni: Arianna Santiago

Arianna Santiago is the 2024-2026 TOMODACHI Alumni Regional Representative of the California Region based in Laguna Niguel, California. She is an alumnus of the Daiwa House 2016 Student Leadership Conference in Dallas, where she graduated from the Southern Methodist University (SMU). She has a passion for understanding people and cultures and currently works as a Strategy & Storytelling Director for Omnicom Commerce. Differences in American and Japanese marketing fascinate her, and much of Arianna’s career has been split between the U.S. and Japan. She even undertook a Japanese language and culture degree to keep up! She loves volunteering with kids and recently had the opportunity to teach an arts and science camp to expat students in Nagoya. Her goal is to connect TOMODACHI alumni across the very wide region of California.

U.S.-JAPAN COUNCIL (Japan) Program Coordinator

The Program Coordinator will work closely with Managers, Directors, and other senior staff to provide administrative support in the development, coordination and execution of assigned programs that support and promote USJC’s mission. This position is responsible for the administrative and operational functions required to coordinate activities, manage events, and provide administrative and staff support for assigned programs, which include new and existing USJC signature, regional, and other educational programs in various areas.

This is a full-time position based in the U.S.-Japan Council Tokyo office which allows teleworking.  This will be a one year contract for the first five years and renewed every year.   A Japanese native and fluency in English is required. USJC does not sponsor visas for working in Japan.

U.S.-Japan Council Development & Program Intern
The Development & Program Intern will assist the Development Manager in fundraising and organizing events for business leaders for the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC). Responsibilities include drafting documents in Japanese and English, translation, writing newsletter articles, creating presentations and promotional materials, and providing administrative support for event planning and management. The position is primarily remote, but may require office work and on-site event support as needed.

Interns, TOMODACHI Initiative (remote)
TOMODACHI Initiative is currently seeking interns. The internship offers an exciting environment where interns will be exposed to the non-profit, corporate, and government fields simultaneously. Responsibilities include creating and drafting documents, translation, website management, social media management, newsletter development support, public speaking, communication with program participants, designing presentations and posters, and event planning and operations. Interns generally work remotely, but may be asked to assist with in-person events as needed.

Social Media Intern, TOMODACHI Initiative Alumni (remote)
