TOMODACHI Initiative Abuzz at the 2013 U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference

Over 400 people gathered in Washington, DC from for the U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference from October 3-5, 2013. Laura Winthrop Abbot, Executive Director of the TOMODACHI Initiative, presented the future vision for the TOMODACHI Initiative, outlining the successes of the program, the impact on the participants and the support from the many donors that help make it all possible. U.S.-Japan Council members also spent a half-day brainstorming ways they could add value and get more involved with TOMODACHI programs around the United States and across Japan. More »

Hour-Long Program on TOMODACHI-MUFG Program Airs on BS-TBS; Program Advertised Throughout the Tokyo Metro

On October 12, the highly-rated BS-TBS television program, “Gift for the Future,” was exclusively dedicated to coverage of the 2nd TOMODACHI-MUFG International Exchange Program that brought 26 American high school students to Japan this July. More »

TOMODACHI Women Leaders Embark on Journey of Self-Discovery

Don’t sell yourself short! That message echoed throughout the second meeting of the TOMODACHI Women’s Leadership Program, which pairs 20 college-aged women with 20 mid-career professional women in Tokyo. In the first of three professionally facilitated sessions, the participants collaborated in groups to discover their own latent leadership potential. Participants and mentors engaged in a three-hour journey that centered around self-reflection and constructive discussions about how to engage with peers and supervisors in a professional setting. TOMODACHI NGO Leadership Supported by J.P. Morgan Brings Japanese Non-Profit Leaders to Oregon for Humanitarian Response Workshop


Working in partnership with the U.S.-based NGO, Mercy Corps and Japan Platform, TOMODACHI brought 12 Japanese NGO professionals from nine different NGOs to Mercy Corps headquarters in Portland, Oregon from September 22-29, 2013. Japanese participants met with counterparts from NGOs in China, Korea, Taiwan, and shared and learned best practices with counterparts from the United States. Almost all of the Japanese participants brought with them hands-on experience from the Tohoku response – and several of them were also experienced international responders. More »

Bank of America Merrill Lynch hosts Charity Wine Dinner to Benefit TOMODACHI

Fine wines can make a difference! On October 2, 2013, Bank of America Merrill Lynch hosted the 3rd Annual Napa Valley Charity Wine Dinner in Tokyo with proceeds going to benefit the TOMODACHI Initiative. For the second year running, Bank of America Merrill Lynch dedicated proceeds from this event to support global leadership training for TOMODACHI program participants. The presence of Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso and Charge d'Affaires Kurt Tong from U.S. Embassy Tokyo highlighted the importance both countries place on supporting Japanese and American youth and strengthening people-to-people ties between the United States and Japan. TOMODACHI Tsunami Relief Volunteer Project Brings Ohio University Students to Iwate

From September 26-29, 2013, ten American students from Ohio University studying in Japan and several Japanese students from Iwate Prefectural University met in Iwate prefecture to help seed rice paddies in Otsuchi and deliver water to neighborhoods of Rikuzentakata. The students appeared on September 27 on the evening news of Menkoi TV, Iwate’s largest TV Station. More »

TOMODACHI-UNIQLO Fellowship is Now Recruiting Fellows for 2014!

Help us spread the word! The TOMODACHI-UNIQLO Fellowship provides a world-class educational experience to Japan’s next generation of business and fashion leaders. We are now recruiting for eligible Japanese students to receive financial support to pursue graduate studies at three top-notch U.S. educational institutions starting in 2014: The Stanford Graduate School of Business; Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT); and Parsons The New School for Design. Individuals interested in the Fellowship must apply directly to each educational institution. More »
