Fourteen TOMODACHI Students Meet with Former President Bill Clinton in an Exclusive Discussion

Former President Bill Clinton met with 14 TOMODACHI students at the Maihama Amphitheater in Chiba prefecture before a speaking engagement on November 16. During this informal event, the former President provided advice to the students on being next generation leaders and spoke about the importance of political participation for young people, as well as the significance of government involvement in social issues. Former President Clinton requested this dialogue following a successful meeting with TOMODACHI students in Osaka on February 3. More »

US-Japan Youth Exchange Program (ACIE) Participants Travel to Japan

The TOMODACHI U.S.-Japan Youth Exchange Program promotes cultural awareness and sensitivity among Japanese and American high school students by focusing on service learning and social entrepreneurship.  In July 2013, six Japanese students travelled to Washington, DC and engaged in a variety of cultural exchange events with their American counterparts.  On October 31, the American students arrived in Japan to reunite with the Japanese students and partake in a project focused on providing social action in Tohoku. TOMODACHI x NIKE Women's Marathon Program

In March 2013, the TOMODACHI Initiative and Nike Japan launched a marathon exchange program that fosters friendship and bonding among young female Japanese and American collegiate athletes. Earlier this year, these girls ran the Nagoya Marathon together and on October 31, those same Japanese students visited New York to reunite with the American athletes. They participated in a variety of cultural and athletic activities during their stay, including a tour of Columbia University and a “meet and greet” event with U.S.-Japan Council Members and the Consulate-General of Japan in New York. Young Americans Complete Their Tour with a Farewell Event in Tokyo

The Young Americans, a group of talented performing arts students from the United States that conducts workshops for young people in Japan, concluded their two month tour to Tohoku with a final performance at the Olympic Center in Tokyo on November 13. The Young Americans just completed two TOMODACHI tours: the Young Americans Tohoku Tour 2013 supported by Toyota Motor Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Hitachi Ltd., and the TOMODACHI Young Americans Mini Workshop Tour supported by Goldman Sachs. These programs brought Japanese and American youth together to practice American-style singing and dancing, with the aim to promote self-expression through the power of musical theatre. More »

The Women’s Leadership Program Expands to Kansai


The highly successful TOMODACHI Women’s Leadership Program launched its Osaka chapter on October 25.  At this first event, nine college-aged women met their mid-career professional female mentors for the first time, embarking on a six-month journey that includes developing leadership and networking skills, a financial literacy course and one-on-one mentor-mentee meetings. NPO Leaders Complete Two-Week U.S. Study Tour Supported by J.P. Morgan

Ten local community-based nonprofit leaders from Japan participated in a two-week study tour to Seattle, Washington and San Francisco, Califfornia to visit U.S.-based nonprofit organizations, develop action plans and create networks and friendships with their American counterparts. More »

Alumni from the TOMODACHI SoftBank Leadership Program Gather in Sendai

On November 17, approximately 90 students met in Sendai, Miyagi and presented their action and business plans for helping to revitalize and reconstruct their local communities in Tohoku. Several key businesses attended the event to consider ways to help the students make their plans a reality. More »

The TOMODACHI Suntory Music Scholarship Fund creates opportunities for young Japanese to attend three of the most prestigious music schools in the United States: The Juilliard School; Berklee College of Music; and San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
