TIn the Spotlight: "TOMODACHI Fund for Exchanges" Summer Programs

Thanks to generous support from Toyota Motor Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation and Hitachi, Ltd., nearly 200 students are participating in exchanges between the United States and Japan this summer through the "TOMODACHI Fund for Exchanges." This Fund was established last year to offer exchange opportunities involving Tohoku students. Over the course of the coming months, the Fund for Exchanges will support 12 diverse exchange programs including service projects, homestays and intensive English language study as well as leadership training for participants of past TOMODACHI exchange programs. TOMODACHI U.S.- Japan Youth Exchange Program in Washington, DC (ACIE)

Dallas-Sendai Young Ambassador's Program (NAJAS)From July 23rd - July 30th 2013, ten middle and high school students participated in the Dallas-Sendai Young Ambassador’s Program. The students met with Dallas city officials, took part in homestays, and toured local schools.  More »
New Orleans- Miyagi Youth Jazz Exchange From July 30th - August 9th 2013, 22 middle school students from Kesennuma and Ishinomaki were given the opportunity to play jazz music with American students in New Orleans, Louisiana. More »   TOMODACHI U.S.- Japan Youth Exchange Program in Washington, DC (ACIE)From July 19th - August 9th 2013, six high school students from Japan and six high school students from the DC public school system spent three weeks together learning about social entrepreneurship and community service.  More »

TOMODACHI Rainbow for Japan KidsFrom August 2nd - August 10th 2013, ten middle school and high school baseball players from Ofunato traveled to San Diego on an exchange which included playing baseball, attending MLB games, and engaging in other cultural activities.  More »
TOMODACHI Rainbow for Japan KidsFrom July 11th – July 17th 2013, with the support of the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH), eight Hawaiian students traveled to Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, to reunite with the Tohoku students who had gone to Hawaii last year on the reverse exchange. More »   Drucker for Future Japanese Leaders From July 27th - August 3rd 2013, ten high school students, all TOMODACHI alumni from the Tohoku region, participated in the Drucker for Future Japanese Leaders Program.  More »

TOMODACHI-Mitsui & Co. Leadership Program

TOMODACHI-Mitsui & Co. Leadership Program
From July 26th - August 3rd 2013, the TOMODACHI – Mitsui & Co. Leadership Program kicked off with ten American delegates hailing from Chicago, Detroit, Honolulu, San Jose, and Seattle traveling to Hiroshima and Tokyo to meet with various influential leaders in the government and business sectors. The American delegates participated in corporate and government meetings, as well as cultural events such as a Yakatabune river cruise including a Rakugo performance in English. On their last day, they attended an evening reception held at the residence of Deputy Chief of Mission Kurt Tong, and met their counterparts: ten Japanese delegates from Fukushima, Hiroshima, Okinawa, Saga, and Shizuoka, who will be traveling to the states in September 2013 on the second part of the Mitsui Program.  More »

TOMODACHI Summer 2013 Coca-Cola Educational Homestay Program
From July 22nd - August 8th 2013, 119 Japanese students participated in the TOMODACHI Summer 2013 Coca-Cola Educational Homestay Program. The students first visited Washington, D.C. to tour historical sites and then Atlanta, Georgia to visit The World of Coca Cola before breaking up into six smaller groups to experience homestays in different parts of the United States.  More »

TOMODACHI Summer 2013 SoftBank Leadership Program
From July 22nd - August 12th 2013, 100 high school students from Tohoku participated in the TOMODACHI Summer 2013 SoftBank Leadership Program. In its second year, program took the students to the University of California, Berkeley to experience an intensive three-week course on global leadership development and community service. During the program, the students discussed with each other ways in which to strengthen their local communities by incorporating what they learned in the United States.  More »

TOMODACHI U.S.- Japan Baseball Exchange Program

TOMODACHI U.S.- Japan Baseball Exchange Program
From July 27th- July 29th 2013, 48 boys from Hawaii and Ishinomaki participated in the TOMODACHI U.S.-Japan Baseball Exchange Program, generously funded by aio Hawaii Chairman Duane Kurisu.  Thank you Duane!  In addition to participating in baseball games, the boys toured Ishinomaki and worked together with their chaperones to clean up a local beach.  For more on this program please see blog from the Honolulu Magazine reporter who traveled with the group http://honolulumagazine.com/Honolulu-Magazine/Honolulu-to-Sendai/ or the TOMODACHI website  More »
