TOMODACHI Amway Japan Foundation Tohoku Future Leader Program: Final Presentation
On July 15, 2024, the final presentation event of the “TOMODACHI AmwayJapan Foundation Tohoku Future Leader Program” was held at the Rikuzentakata Amway House Machi no Engawa in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture. Approximately 50 people, including leaders and representatives from the municipal office and participants’ parents, gathered for the event.
After returning from the program in the U.S., participants continued their learning through post-trip seminars in Rikuzentakata City. They developed their presentations by reflecting on their experiences in the U.S. and engaging in discussions for revitalizing the Rikuzentakata community by using the “Logic Model” framework.

The Second Cohort of the TOMODACHI Kibou for Maui Program Visited Tohoku
From July 22 to 26, the second cohort of the TOMODACHI Kibou for Maui Program visited the Tohoku region including Higashimatsushima City, Onagawa Town, and Rikuzentakata City to learn about the reconstruction process and the leadership taken during the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Ten high school students from Lahaina, Island of Maui, who were impacted by the wildfires in August 2023, interacted with local leaders, community members and TOMODACHI alumni.
Participants spent a week in the Tohoku region to learn from local experts and community members who are making positive changes in their communities. In Higashimatsushima, they were welcomed by city hall officials, including Mayor Atsumi and Deputy Mayor Yagi and visited the 3.11 Higashimatsushima Earthquake Disaster Reconstruction Memorial Museum. They learned about the impact of the natural disasters and also visited a local disaster preparation warehouse which serves as a home base stocked with survival kits and supplies for residents in case of another disaster.

U.S. Training Conducted in Various Locations Across the U.S.
From July to August 2024, U.S. training for TOMODACHI programs was conducted in various locations across the United States.
The U.S. training programs that were conducted are listed below.
Although the content of each program varies, it is expected that the U.S. training will be a catalyst for learning and awareness for each participant, and that they will be able to apply their learning and leadership skills in their own communities in the future.
More details about the U.S. training for each program will be provided in future newsletters.

Application Open for 2024-2025 TOMODACHI-Dow Women’s STEM Leadership and Research Program
This program is TOMODACHI-Dow Women’s STEM Leadership and Research Program offers a five-week internship experience tailored to a diverse cohort of 10 female students majoring in STEM in Japan.
The program at Rice University in Houston, TX runs from February 10 to March 12. A two-week virtual program will take place in November.
This program is generously funded by Dow Chemical Japan Limited.

This segment encourages participants to voice their innovative solutions to pressing societal issues, competing for the chance to share their voices on an even larger platform at the U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference in October 2024.
Visionary Voices: A series of panel discussions that delve into the concepts of workplace kaizen and empowering global jinzai. These panels feature thought leaders and experts who discuss the transformation of workplaces through continuous improvement and the integration of global talent into Japan’s industries.

Moderator
Nakamura, Tsuyako
Tsuyako Nakamura is a tenured professor at Doshisha University, specializing in women’s labor issues in the U.S. and Japan. She has worked as a conference interpreter, completed a Ph.D. in American Studies, and published several books on work-life integration and women’s employment policies.
Below are the panelists:
Masunaga, Riley
Born and raised in Hawaii, Riley Masunaga participated in the TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program in 2015. He now works in HR data analytics, program management, and product management at Mercari, while also mentoring and hosting educational events.
Hara, Shiori
Shiori Hara, an alumna of the 2018 TOMODACHI MUFG International Exchange Program, is currently a Core Committee member for the TOMODACHI Alumni Tohoku Region. She studies Philosophy at Sophia University and is passionate about Western philosophical thought and the arts.
Park, Sunwoo
Park Sunwoo, an alumnus of the 2022 TOMODACHI Boeing Entrepreneurship Seminar, co-founded the startup Deepreneur and supports major projects as a presidential intern at Matsuo Lab. In 2024, he was selected as the youngest member of SoftBank Academia and will begin his studies at Waseda University.

Interns, U.S.-Japan Council (Japan) & TOMODACHI Initiative (remote)
The U.S.-Japan Council (Japan) & TOMODACHI Initiative are currently seeking interns. The internship offers an exciting environment where interns will be exposed to the non-profit, corporate, and government fields simultaneously. Responsibilities include creating and drafting documents, translation, website management, social media management, newsletter development support, public speaking, communication with program participants, designing presentations and posters, and event planning and operations. Interns generally work remotely, but may be asked to assist with in-person events as needed.
